I love this time of year. The leaves are down. The weather’s getting colder. Ok, truth be told, I’m not that excited about the cold weather. Although the by product of cold weather is ski season is coming. And that makes me happy. Oh ok, where was I?
Oh yeah. I love this time of year. It’s the start of the Christmas season. I know, all you Americans have yet to really get in the Christmas season. You still have yet to complete both Thanksgiving and Black Friday. And don’t get get me wrong, I’m really looking forward to Thanksgiving and the general chaos that is Black Friday. But up here in Canadialand, Christmas is in full force. The paper is full of ads, Walmart is talking about their price matching for Christmas on tv. Heck, I walked out of Home Depot this week as a tractor trailer was uploading Christmas trees! So yeah, it’s in full force.
This year I’m either off my game, or just incredibly busy, because I had two homes on my street beat me to decorating their homes. Let me tell ya, it frustrated me! I usually beat everyone on our street. And by beat, I mean I’m putting lights up in a t-shirt. And here in Canada, that’s kinda a big deal. So I got beat. I don’t like to be beat. I like to win. I like to be first. Don’t worry I got over it pretty quick.
Normally I string light on our house outlining our roofline. But not this year. This year, I’ve gone GINGERBREAD! Yuppers, gingerbread. And no, this has nothing to do with me getting beat to the punch by my wonderful neighbors. Nothing at all! One of the other improvements I’ve made this year is to add my outdoor lights to my Lutron RadioRa system.
This has been the biggest improvement yet. Anyone who knows me, knows I love my RA2 system. This has made my outdoor lights even better. I added more lights the year. Not a big deal, I barely even noticed it when I strung the lights in the afternoon. At night, (read 6pm) I discovered that these additional lights made it really really bright. Enter my wonderful dimmer. Drop those lights down to 70%-75% and the house looks completely different. Not to mention its nice to be able to check them from my iPad or iPhone or from a keypad in my family room. No longer do I have to go out to the garage to turn them on. And yes, I’m kinda that lazy. Well, not lazy but I do really like the connivence of it! Although, I did get a few funny looks as I was setting the limits. I don’t really understand why? It’s not like I was out there at 8pm, in the dark, across the street, looking at my house, with my iPad, watching my house lights flashing all about. Luckily the end result rocks. Even though I’ve still got one window to go!
